Hawes means a ‘pass between mountains’ and it stands between the stunning Buttertubs and Fleet Moss. The small Yorkshire market town of Hawes is one of England’s highest at 850ft (259m) above sea level. Fleet Moss is one of the Yorkshire Dales’ most famous cycling climbs and is noted for being the highest road in the county. With breath-taking scenery, it’s no surprise that Hawes is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Things to do in Hawes
Tuesday market attracts locals and tourists – Hawes was first recorded as a marketplace in 1307. Visit the world-famous Wensleydale Cheese Creamery and store and you can also discover the nearby 18th-century water-powered Gayle Mill dating from 1784. Gayle Mill is thought to be the oldest structurally unaltered cotton mill in existence. It was subsequently converted to a working sawmill using electricity generation with original working Victorian turbines, line-shafting and woodworking machinery and is now a working sawmill and traditional craft skills centre.
