The Piece Hall is more than just a venue. Unlike modern arenas, the Piece Hall is located in the centre of town with all the pubs, bars, restaurants and shops literally on the doorstep, so you can make a leisurely day of your visit should you wish. Depending on which entrance you choose, The Piece Hall is just a 2-minute or a 4-minute walk from Halifax railway station. Step inside the stunning Piece Hall courtyard and you’ll feel as though you’re in a Renaissance piazza and you’ll appreciate why the venue’s atmosphere and setting are so special for bands and audiences alike.

The Piece Hall has 4 entrances. On Piece Hall Live music event days only 3 Piece Hall entrances are used as follows:

  1. West Gate for Premium Tickets Holders, Access Platform Guests, and Box office
  2. East Gate for General Admission Ticket Holders (Steps by the Library and Calderdale Industrial Museum)
  3. Southgate for General Admission Ticket Holders (By Railway Hotel Pub, off Horton Street)

4, North Gate, by Woolshops, is closed on music event day evenings and is used for temporary toilet block facilities.

Piece Hall Gigs Prohibited Items:

What can I and can’t I take in the Piece Hall Live Music Events? – Prohibited items for Piece Hall Gigs are on the following list:

  • Backpacks along with any bags larger than an A4 piece of paper
  • Alcohol bought outside the venue
  • Smoking/vaping anywhere, including the courtyard
  • Glass bottles, cans, flasks Any drink receptacles except one 500ml plastic water bottle sealed or

  • Cool boxes, hampers Flags, banners and helium balloons
  • Laser pointers, pens, glow sticks, flares, fireworks, smoke grenades and
  • aerosol cans
  • Air horns, whistles or other noise-making distractions Sharp objects, or any items that could be used as a weapon

  • Chairs, portable furniture (inflatable or otherwise)

To make sure The Piece Hall is a safe environment for everyone, mandatory bag searches will be carried out and security may search you, your clothing or other items.

Piece Hall Parking for Piece Hall Gigs

The nearby large Eureka car park next to the train station closes at 8pm, however, The Piece Hall is in Halifax town centre where there are plenty of car parks and on-street parking spaces, all within walking distance. See below.

Piece Hall Gigs – Travelling to the Piece Hall by Train

Direct Grand Central trains run from London King’s Cross station to Halifax. There are also direct trains to Halifax from many other places including Manchester, Leeds, York, Bradford, Huddersfield, Chester and Blackpool.

Halifax Town Centre has many car parks and on-street parking spaces within walking distance of The Piece Hall as listed above (charges may apply). From the M62, exit at junction 24 and follow signs for Halifax (A629) and the brown tourism signs, or Junction 26 taking the A58 towards Halifax and brown tourism signs.

Halifax town centre has a number of designated bays for Blue Badge holders, the nearest one to The Piece Hall is on Westgate. Other designated bays are located on Alexandra Street, Commercial Street, Corporation Street, Gaol Lane, Northgate, Old Market, Rawson Street, Thomas Street and Wade Street.

The Piece Hall enjoyed a record-breaking year in 2023, with more than 125,000 tickets sold across headline shows by the likes of Sting, Queens of The Stone Age, James, George Ezra and Boygenius.

2023, the second year of music promoters Cuffe and Taylor’s 5-year deal with The Piece Hall Trust, saw more superstars at the historic venue playing in the Piece Hall’s beautiful Italian-like atmospheric and acoustically good central piazza.

2022 was their first year and saw global stars playing at the Piece Hall including Tom Jones, Nile Rogers & Chic, Noel Gallager, Durran Durran and Paloma Faith.

Madness, the British pop giants started the lineup for Piece Hall Live 2023. The “Nutty Boys” Madness were at the historic Piece Hall courtyard on Friday 16 June with hits from their superb back catalogue.

Nicky Chance-Thompson, the inspirational CEO of The Piece Hall Trust announced “Due to phenomenal demand, we are pleased to be able to confirm a second show with the brilliant Madness here on Saturday, June 17. Thank you Madness!!

Madness Formed in Camden, London and have played to millions of fans chalking up 15 UK Top 10 singles – including Our House, It Must Be Love, One Step Beyond, My Girl, Wings Of A Dove and Baggy Trousers – together with 10 Top 10 albums!

British reggae legends UB40 featuring Ali Campbell were at Piece Hall Live 2023. UB40 featuring Ali Campbell are seen as one of the most important and influential British bands of the last 50 years.

UB40 headed by Ali Campbell and their 10-piece touring band played numbers from Unprecedented released 1 July 2022 and their fabulous hits spanning more than four decades such as Red Red Wine.

Ali Campbell was a founding member and lead singer of UB40. UB40 have achieved three UK Number 1 spots with Red, Red Wine, I Got You Babe (Chrissie Hynde) and I Can’t Help Falling In Love with You, together with plus 17 Top 10 singles.

Queens of the Stone Age’s Piece Hall gig was the very first of Queens Of The Stone Age’s highly anticipated return to the UK in 2023 and the first live performance in the UK since their 2018 Villains tour.

One of the gig highlights of the summer 2023, Grammy Award winners The War On Drugs from Philadelphia brought their 2023 European Tour to the iconic Piece Hall in Halifax. The War on Drugs is one of this century’s great bands with their unique music that blends folk, indie, classic and psychedelic rock.

The War on Drugs headline show at The Piece Hall was one of only four UK dates in 2023 with their set packed with anthems including Under The Pressure, Red Eyes, Burning, Thinking of a Place, Pain, Victim, In Chains and An Ocean in Between the Waves.

The War on Drugs band won the best rock album with A Deeper Understanding at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.

Ministry of Sound Classical – The Piece Hall was the perfect backdrop for an incredible live music spectacle as Ministry of Sound Classical’s favourite dance tracks were orchestrated and re-imagined by the awesome 30-piece orchestra and stunning vocalists with top DJs Roger Sanchez and K-Klass and female saxophonist Ellie Sax.

Ministry of Sound Classical provided an incredible sound and light experience set in Halifax’s magnificent town centre Piece Hall venue.

Named after the iconic London venue, clubs don’t come more iconic than London’s Ministry of Sound, the legendary venue was at the heart of the huge house scene of the 1990s and is one of the biggest global brands in dance music. The Piece Hall Ministry of Sound Classical incredible set had such classics as Hey Boy Hey Girl (The Chemical Brothers), Sunchyme (Dario G), Insomnia (Faithless), Right Here, Right Now(Fat Boy Slim) plus many more and delivered like never before!

EMBRACE – SATURDAY 1ST JULY 2023 PIECE HALL LIVE HALIFAX

Embrace played their classic album GOOD WILL OUT in its entirety plus their greatest hits for their 25th Anniversary Home Town Show on Saturday 1st July 2023 at the Piece Hall, supported by Starsailor and indie-pop artist Ellur.

By popular demand, George Ezra announced a second show at the Piece Hall for the summer of 2023. Sting My Songs Tour 2023: Sting, one of the world’s most successful and distinctive solo artists appeared in the Italianesque courtyard of the Georgian Grade 1 Piece Hall in Halifax town centre on Tuesday, 4 July 2023.

The Ivors Academy Fellowship winner 2023 and 17-time Grammy Award winner legendary rock icon Sting brought his My Songs World Tour to the Piece Hall’s iconic courtyard. Sting has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide with his gold-plated back catalogue set featured Sting’s best-loved songs from his times with The Police and as a solo artist including Englishman In New York, Every Breath You Take, Roxanne, Message In A Bottle and many more.

Sting, although born in Newcastle in northern England, felt at home in the beautiful and atmospheric Italian-style piazza of the Halifax Piece Hall because Sting has lived for many years in Tuscany at Il Palagio. Jessie Ware who played at the Piece Hall in 2022 and has 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify said about visiting and playing at the Piece Hall, ” The Piece Hall is just like Venice!” We know what she means!

Sting’s winery produces around 150,000 bottles of wine a year, including one sparkling wine, three red wines, a rosé, and a white wine. Music fans will be delighted to know that three of the wines have been named after Sting’s songs, including “Message in a Bottle”.

The Cult brought their ‘Under The Midnight Sun’ European Tour to The Piece Hall. The Cult were formed in nearby Bradford in Yorkshire. The Cult became famous in the mid-1980s with their hits Rain, Fire Woman, Love Removal Machine, Lil’ Devil and She Sells Sanctuary.

Chart-topper George Ezra, the BRIT Award-winning and multi-platinum-selling artist’s appearance followed his sell-out UK tour off the back of his third Number One album Gold Rush Kid, which features the hit singles Anyone For You and Ezra’s great singalong hit Green Green Grass. George Ezra’s Piece Hall 2023 show sold out in minutes, leading to a second night being announced for the earlier date of Monday 3 July 2003.

James Appeared at the Piece Hall for two nights fresh from celebrating their 40th anniversary, the indie legends James had sold more than 25 million records worldwide since forming in Manchester in 1982.

The band James were supported at the Piece Hall Halifax by special guests Jamie Webster and Tom A Smith.

THE LUMINEERS Sunday 9 July 2023 7:30 pm 

The first band to be confirmed for The Piece Hall Live 2023 were The Lumineers.

The indie folk stars The Lumineers were on their massive Brightside world tour. The Lumineers’ single Ho Hey which has now been streamed more than 300 million times on YouTube.

The Lumineers’ second album CLEOPATRA went to Number One in America, Canada, and the UK and their third album,  III was released to critical acclaim in 2019.

The fourth Lumineers album BRIGHTSIDE, produced singles Big Shot and A.M. Radio and saw them tour Europe and North America before heading to Australia, New Zealand and Asia on their world tour.

Dale Castell presented The Our House Summer Special after an incredible sold-out summer show in 2022, Dale Castell & the Our House Family returned to The Piece Hall for an evening of uplifting club classics, along with the special friendly Our House atmosphere.

Special guests included House legends Seb Fontaine & Allister Whitehead and a live performance from the fantastic Kathy Brown, singing her brilliant Strings of Life & Turn Me Out.

There was also the fantastic John Marshall and Marc Leaf along with the amazing Saxmode on Saxophone and Romi on drums.

YORKSHIRE PROMS Sunday, July 23 2023 7:00 pm PIECE HALL LIVE HALIFAX

The Piece Hall, for the first time, hosted a dedicated Proms night featuring the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra.

The Yorkshire Proms offered audiences to gather in Yorkshire for a comparable live experience to the esteemed event held at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Northern Audiences enjoyed the Proms hits, with Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory, alongside popular classics from Rodgers and Bernstein, and the epic Nessun Dorma.

There was a Yorkshire twist, with Ilkley Moor Baht’at and A Yorkshire Overture, a piece written by the conductor, composer and musician, Ben Crick.

The 50-strong Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra reformed in the spring of 2021 as a direct result of the pandemic to support northern musicians hit hard by the virus and closure of live events. One of the orchestra’s founders was Richard Noel Middleton, the great-grandfather of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

Leeds Alan Bennett was a regular audience member of the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra in his boyhood and so was artist Bradford’s David Hockney who was born in Hutton Terrace, Eccleshill.

Limp Bizkit the American rap rock band from Jacksonville brought their iconic explosive live show to The Piece Hall with their 24-song set with Fred Durst and company performing “Barnacle” off their album, Still Sucks.

BOYGENIUS Tuesday, August 22 and Wednesday, August 23 2023 7:00 pm PIECE HALL LIVE HALIFAX

The acclaimed American indie group with Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus and Ethel Cain joined Boygenius for the show in the iconic open-air Piece Hall courtyard.

Boygenius confirmed in 2023 their long-awaited return with the release of three singles from their album $20, Emily I’m Sorry, and True Blue.

The first full-length project from Boygenius followed their self-produced, self-titled EP back in 2018 and was released on March 31, 2023

ORBITAL Friday, August 25, 2023 7:00 pm PIECE HALL LIVE HALIFAX

Orbital plus DJ sets from Groove Armada and 808 State Dance music legends Orbital were at the Phe Piece Hall. Orbital, electronic music pioneers played a monumental live show.

Orbital were joined by special guests Groove Armada (brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll) and 808 State and delivered DJ sets. They became one of the biggest names in music during the mid-1990s by reinventing the notion of what a dance act could do live.

The Charlatans have been an inspirational force in British music for more than 30 years with 22 Top 40 singles and 14 Top 40 studio albums – three of which were number ones.

Lead singer Tim Burgess said in 2023: “Yorkshire crowds have always been among our warmest and loudest supporters and we cannot wait to play for them again alongside our good friend Johnny Marr.”

Johnny Marr, a British music icon and a founding member and songwriter of The Smiths, a superstar collaborator and sensational solo artist in his own right joined the Charlatans at the Piece Hall

Fever Dreams Pts 1-4, the brilliant fourth solo album described by Johnny Marr as “the most ambitious solo record I’ve done” was greeted by widespread critical acclaim.

His live shows included songs from across his whole career, from classic Smiths and Electronic hits to his diverse solo work such as fan favourites Easy Money, Night and Day, Spirit, Spiral Cities and Power and Soul.
