Sons of Neptune – Film Released in 2022

A uniquely British comedy-drama film about the small guys taking on the big man. This is an unbelievable-but-true story set in Scarborough, North Yorkshire in the 1980s.

The Sons of Neptune film, directed and written by Niall Johnson (White Noise, Keeping Mum) – of what happened when the might of Yorkshire Water and the UK government was challenged by the Sons Of Neptune, a group of six middle-aged swimmers of Scarborough – when they convinced the world’s experts to join their campaign to stop the dumping of raw untreated sewage into our seas.

The battle waged 40 years ago in the 1980s between Yorkshire Water and six swimmers of Scarborough: a solicitor, a chiropodist, an accountant, a bookie, a teacher and a marketing man – Sons of Neptune.

In essence, it was a fairly simple debate. Yorkshire Water needed to deal with Scarborough’s sewage effluent and it argued that, given a long enough outfall, any harmful solid sewage dumped into the sea would not wash back up on the shore – and, even if it did so, bacteria would not survive hours in the cold water and would therefore be harmless.

The Sons of Neptune argued that it would be washed back to shore and that it would not just be dormant, but waiting only for a little warmth to revive its virulence.

The Sons of Neptune began organising publicity stunts to highlight their cause.  At first, they thought they were merely taking on the mandarins of the local town council and the stubborn bureaucrats of Yorkshire Water.

Soon, though, they were at war with Maggie Thatcher’s Conservative Government and the might of the Establishment itself, along with dissenters amid the local population who thought the publicity was bad for business.

40 years later the Sons of Neptune are “Friends with Yorkshire Water” as a new wastewater treatment plant just off the A165 north of Scarborough was built in the 1990s to treat sewage from Scarborough.
