Free to enter, The Piece Hall, centrally located within Halifax town centre, is one of England’s most elegant structures. It is the dramatic Italian piazza-like beating heart of Halifax. Opened in 1779 in the centre of Halifax for cloth trading, and now in the 21st century, the Piece Hall is a fine place to wander through its independent stores in the classical gallery arcades, indulge in a gin and tonic, a craft beer, enjoy a sit-down meal or a light snack, people-watch, or attend an outdoor performance by the music industry’s most influential global acts.

The Halifax Gibbet: Halifax Visitor Information
At the junction of Gibbet Street and Bedford Street, a short walk from Halifax town centre, stands a non-working replica of the Gibbet. The Gibbet is a significant part of Halifax’s history. It was the only one of its kind, and the Gibbet is an iconic part of the local landscape.
The guillotine was used in England before it was introduced into France, and was known as the Halifax Gibbet, a device for execution. Although decapitation was used as an execution method in other parts of England, Halifax used an execution machine, unique in England.
The Gibbet was introduced to Halifax by the Earl of Warrene. The Gibbet was believed to have been put in place first to deter cattle thieves and then cloth thieves. Records of executions date from 1270 to 1650.
The Gibbet blade weighed 7lb 12oz (3.2Kg) and was attached to a block of wood held by a piece of rope from the top of the Gibbet tower.
The rope would be attached to a pin at the side of the Gibbet platform; one pull of the rope sent the blade hurtling downwards. It is said that in the case of a cloth theft, the rope would be passed among the crowd for someone to pull, while in the case of animal theft, the rope would be attached to the stolen animal, whatever it was. Other methods were the use of a horse – once the horse was instructed to move, the blade fell.

Victoria Theatre: Halifax Visitor Information
The Victoria Theatre, on the junction of Commercial Street and Fountain Street, was built in 1901 as a concert hall and retains many of its original Victorian and Art Nouveau features. The foyer retains the original features with a broad staircase topped by an ornate stained-glass dome. Under the dome is a bust of Queen Victoria.

Halifax Victoria theatre is used for a wide range of events and has an exciting and varied programme. With a choice of 1,512 seats over 3 levels or 1,875 for a standing gig, its flexible space can accommodate intimate plays, ballet, opera, family shows, stand up comedy, children’s shows and the annual pantomime as well as being a great venue for live rock music and musicals.

The Victoria Theatre Halifax has 2 main bars and also a smaller bar for pre-show and interval drinks. The theatre also has pop up bars for larger events, including bars in the main auditorium for stand up rock and contemporary music gigs.

The Green Room Bar on the Circle level of the theatre is the largest bar. It is open for all main auditorium events, and plays host to the Victoria Theatre’s monthly comedy club called Dick and Liddy’s which is held on the last Friday of every month (except for December). The Green Room Bar is not easily accessible for wheelchair users.

Square Chapel Arts Centre: Halifax Visitor Information
Square Chapel is located in the heart of Halifax town centre, next door to The Piece Hall and opposite Halifax Railway Station. The main entrance is located next door to the The Piece Hall’s South Gate. If arriving from Black Ledge, Square Chapel Arts Centre is to the right of the Railway pub.
Built in 1772, Square Chapel is a beautiful red brick Georgian Chapel, one of only a handful of square churches ever built. It was designed by 16-year-old Thomas Bradley who also went on to design the stunning Piece Hall which is next door.

Halifax Town Hall: Halifax Visitor Information
Halifax Town Hall was opened at a two-day event on the 3rd & 4th of August 1863 by HRH The Prince of Wales (King Edward VII). 358 trains brought 70,000 people, and thousands more walked to attend the two-day session of openings and visits.
Halifax’s ornate and magnificent town hall was designed by Charles Barry, who also designed the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London. The Grade 2 listed and protected building has a magnificent 180ft (54.86m) tower and spire which is metal-covered and was decorated by John Thomas with statues representing the four continents.

Carved proverbs including “Delay Not to Do Well” and “Fear God always” are to the clock faces. On the corners of the spire are four seven-foot angels.
Halifax Town Hall’s central Victoria Hall has a cantilevered gallery and a magnificent stained glass roof.
24,000 tons of local Ringby sandstone was used for the building, which was quarried from nearby Swalesmoor, near to the current day Halifax Ski & Snowboard Centre. The building should be understood in the context of the whole group of magnificent buildings in the Crossley Street area, including the current Grayston Unity pub, the UK’s smallest music venue.
To the front of Halifax Town Hall is the gold-coloured post box to honour Hannah Cockroft, the local multi-gold medalist Paralympian.

Calderdale Industrial Museum: Halifax Visitor Information
Suitable for all ages, their working exhibits evoke the spirit of the Industrial Revolution. The museum is located immediately outside the Piecehall’s Eastgate and next to the Square Chapel. It is also very close to Halifax railway station, and the famous Eureka! children’s museum.
Calderdale Industrial Museum is open Saturday 10:00am to 4:00pm and Thursdays in school holidays
Calderdale Industrial Museum is run almost entirely by volunteer enthusiasts who believe that the industrial heritage of Calderdale should be preserved and shared with visitors.
Calderdale Industrial Museum houses their special collection representing the wide variety of industries developed in Calderdale over the last 250 years including textiles, confectionery manufacturing and engineering.
They have a cafe where hot drinks and cake are served, and a shop selling unique locally made items.

By bus – Halifax bus station has links to all nearby towns and cities. A short walk through the shopping centre and the Piece Hall will take you to Calderdale Industrial Museum, just outside the East Gate of the Piece Hall.

Halifax Minster: Halifax Visitor Information
Halifax Minster dates from the 1400s, although there is evidence of stonework from earlier periods.
Halifax Minster – the Spiritual Home and Burial Place of Anne Lister (Gentleman Jack)
Halifax Minster still contains wooden box pews from the 1600s with Jacobean box pews being a prominent feature of the Minster and most of those in the nave date from 1633–4. A pew in the centre aisle has the remains of a memorial brass to John Waterhouse, who died in 1540. The carved arms of Richard Sunderland who died in 1634, are on another pew. Several ancient pew nameplates can be seen attached to a board on the inner north wall of the tower, the oldest of which is from 1615 and says: “This stall made at the cost of Robert Fisher of Halifax”
Most of the medieval stained glass was removed during Oliver Cromwell’s Puritan Commonwealth period (the mid-1600s) and there are several leaded windows with plain glass from that period. Most of the stained glass that now exists, including the East window, is from the Victorian era.

Halifax Minster – The Spiritual Home of Anne Lister (Gentleman Jack)
The tombstone of Anne Lister of Shibden Hall, Halifax (1791-1840), a noted local diarist who died while travelling with her partner Ann Walker in Georgia, has been recently rediscovered.
Anne Lister was baptised in Halifax Minster and is buried there, in the Lister family vault. There is a pilgrimage walk, The Way of the Setts Anne Lister Pilgrimage which is focused around the central aspects of Anne Lister (3rd April 1791 to 22nd September 1840). It takes in Halifax Minster and Shibden Hall and the challenging hilly paths which Anne regularly walked between these two historic buildings.
The basis of this pilgrimage is Anne’s deeply held faith, which did not conflict with any aspect of her life, the route explores the paths that took her to and from her home at Shibden Hall to Halifax Minster.
It takes you to the high points overlooking the scene of Halifax which includes some of the same landmarks which Anne would have seen such as the Piece Hall and the Square Chapel, from high above the town. It takes you to her home at Shibden Hall, and through her land.

Dean Clough: Halifax Visitor Information
Close to the town centre, these magnificent Grade II listed Victorian mills were constructed between 1840 and 1870 by the Crossley family who founded the Crossley Carpet empire at this site in 1822.

The arts have been being a vital part of this journey including Northern Broadsides, with the 300-seat subterranean Viaduct Theatre, half a dozen galleries with original artworks, artist studios and a dedicated Arts Mill all contributing to the dynamic whole of this unique site.
Dean Clough is within easy walking distance of Halifax town centre. It is part of a rich, vibrant cultural network that includes Eureka! The National Children’s Museum, The Piece Hall, Shibden Hall and Halifax Minster, all set within the stunning countryside of Calderdale in West Yorkshire.
Should you be interested in a little more industrial archaeology, take the fascinating short walk from Halifax town centre to Dean Clough via the cobbled North Bridge Street and Bowling Dyke, under the Victorian North Bridge and the 1970s high-level Burdock Way A58 bridge. By taking this walking route you will further understand the many challenges surmounted by the enterprising Victorians and other generations.

Why is it called Woolshops?
Woolshops derives its name from medieval times when the street was known as the area for buying and selling wool produced by farmers in the surrounding hills around Halifax. The wool was sold to weavers, who worked at home in their distinctive weavers’ cottages, who produced 30-yard-long pieces of cloth to be later sold in the adjacent Piece Hall, which opened in 1779.

A memorial commemorating The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment’s 304 years of service to the Crown, is located at Woolshops Halifax. The Duke of Wellington Regiment is now the 3rd battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment.
The Duke of Wellington’s is the only Regiment to be named after a person not of Royal Blood, The ‘Iron Duke’, was born Arthur Wellesley. The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment has had a long association with the town of Halifax since its raising in 1702. The iconic Grade 2 listed Halifax Building Society Building was designed in 1968-1974 and is an iconic 20th-century building, one of the most architecturally influential buildings of the 20th century. You’ll see it opposite Electric Bowl or when you’re at the Victoria Theatre, The Victorian Craft Beer Café or perhaps later at the ATIK nightclub!

La Luna opened as Blue Dahlia in 1957, making it one of the oldest restaurants in Halifax.
